Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis in the hand, wrist & fingers

Joints in our wrists, hands and fingers are used every day. Some of these joints are especially prone to wear and tear (osteoarthritis). The finger joints closest to the nails (DIP joints) and the base of the thumb are most frequently affected. Symptoms are pain, reduced motion and deformity of the affected joint.

Treatment of osteoarthritis should start with nonsurgical methods (change of use, pain relief, splints). If symptoms are ongoing, surgery can be considered.

Affected joints can be removed, replaced or fused, depending on the which joint is involved and the patient’s wishes and expectations.
